How is it that I can say "I don't much like the direction I see myself heading in.", when I've never been there before?

I think that's right...sometimes we just get a "gut feeling" or as you put it..."we just know".
I would say, looking back now in hindsight that if I had paid a little bit more attention to that "voice" I may have avoided at least some of the trouble that came on me later on...but I ignored the "sometimes you just know" thing and pushed on...over the cliff!
... and hanging on by a fingernail. That's what I see.
